Today, on 30 August 2024, the Executive Mayor, Cllr. Ngelosi Ndhlovu, closed off women’s month in style by hosting the Mkhondo Annual Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Dialogue in Amsterdam. Executive Mayor passionately addressed women from different communities during the event.

This session follows the SALGA Mandela event that took place on 18 July 2024 in Amsterdam, where the Executive Mayor was deeply moved by the GBV-related issues raised.

The reported cases of GBV in Amsterdam indicate that women are facing significant challenges related to GBV, as well as women across all spheres in Mkhondo.

Representatives from various sectors empowered women in attendance by sharing information on the services available and the importance of reporting cases of GBV.

The Executive Mayor covered a wide range of topics but primarily focused on the importance of financial independence to prevent situations where a woman may feel compelled to stay in an abusive relationship due to financial constraints.

Prior to the event, the Executive Mayor and her entourage visited three centers situated in Amsterdam, Siyanakekela Drop Center, Sizanani Stimulation Center, and Ithemba Aged Group, where various mayoral gifts were donated.

The session brought together stakeholders such as the Department of Social Development, South African Police Services, GRIP, You Are Not Alone Foundation, Department of Health, Thando Care Services, MLM Councillors, MLM officials, members of the community, and other key stakeholders to exchange best practices and solutions for combating GBV in Amsterdam and throughout Mkhondo.
