On Thursday, 3 April 2025, Cllr. Walter Vilakazi, the MMC for Community Services, visited the Khalishwayo family in Welverdiend under Ward 17 to express condolences and offer support following a devastating house fire. The fire which remains under investigation, tragically resulted in the deaths of two young children, a 7 year-old boy and a 5 year-old girl.
The incident has left the family in mourning, with the children’s mother, aged 29, and the 3-month-old baby suffering serious injuries from the blaze, both currently hospitalised.
As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, the municipality rallies around the Khalishwayo family, offering prayers and assistance during this difficult time.
The loss of such young lives is a profound reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of community solidarity in times of crisis.
