Annual KANGRA Assegaai Marathon
Experience real rural road running through the scenic, undulating hills of rural Piet Retief (Mkhondo) in Mpumalanga with the 27th KANGRA Assegaai Marathon 3-in-1 every year in February​

Annual Rainbow Festival
Held Mid September every year. This includes Fun Rides, Merry Go Rounds, Go-Carts, Paintball Arena, 4x4 Track, Jumping Castle, Information Stalls for Industries, Food Stalls, Beer Tents, Live Entertainment and the Miss Rainbow Festival

Fishing
Another great pastime here in Piet Retief. The dams (Heyshope & Morgenstond) and rivers in the area are well-stocked with indigenous yellowtail and Natal yellowfin fish. This offers excellent fly and coarse fishing that will make any angler excited to cast his line.​

Grey Rhebok Hiking Trails
Start: Donkerhoek Road between Amersfoort and Piet Retief Finish: base camp Duration: 5 different trails that range between 300 metres and 11km Fitness: the first 3 trails are not difficult and perfect for beginners.

Eat out at La Ta4ula
Enjoy fresh seasonal South African Cuisine at La Ta4ula bistro restaurant, situated half way between the beautiful Sodwana Bay beaches and Johannesburg. The small menu offers some classic favourites.

Rainbow Route
The Rainbow Route links the provinces of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal starting at Carolina. It passes through the towns of Kriel, Bethal, Ermelo, Chrissiesmeer, Amsterdam, and Piet Retief.

Hiking
Another well supported activity in and around Piet Retief is hiking. Excellent trails in the area including the Assegai Hiking Trail - a popular trail through stunning mountainous areas - and many others all range from one to five days and longer through pristine countryside.​
