Mr Maqhawe Kunene
New Municipal Manager, Mr Maqhawe Kunene joined Mkhondo Local Municipality on the 01st June 2017. He is from Tjakastad in Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality. He was born on the 31st December 1979. Where he started his early schooling and later matriculated at Cefups Academy in Nelspruit.
He holds several qualifications a Bachelor of Science Degree and Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Microbiology both obtained from the University of Zululand, Diploma in Human Resource Management from Oxbridge academy, Diploma in Train Driver duties from School of Rail, Certificate in Labour Relations from Unisa, Certificate in Municipal Finance from Regenesys Business School and Certificate in Safety Management (SAMTRAC) from NOSA. He is currently in the process of completing his dissertation in Master of Business Administration (MBA) with the Regent Business School.
He has served in various student, community and workers leadership positions, as part of his contribution to the broader mass movement. While at the University of Zululand, He was a member of the University Student Representative Council (SRC) from 2000 to 2001 and represented Students in the Science Faculty Board and University Senate. As worker’s representative at Transnet Freight Rail and also represented workers in various governance structures including Risk Management Committee, Employment Equity Committee, Transformation Committee and etc.
Mr Kunene has occupied several senior management positions at various companies, He started his working Career in 2003 as an Educator at Gems Combined School, and in 2004 he Joined Transnet Freight Rail (Previously Spoornet) in Ermelo as a Train Assistant and later in 2007 he was appointed as Manager responsible for Fleet and Auxiliary. In 2010 he was appointed as Manager, Human Capital, then in 2013 he joined Gert Sibande District Municipality as a General Manager responsible for Community and Social Services before being appointed as Municipal Manager for Mkhondo Local Municipality. Mr Kunene carries with him wealth of experience in various fields especially in the priority areas of the Municipality.
