MKHONDO LOCAL MUNICIPALITY BOOSTS WATER SECURITY AS THE DEPARTMENT OF WATER AND SANITATION (DWS) HANDOVER REFURBISHED MKHONDO (PIET RETIEF) WATER TREATMENT WORKS

The 24th of March 2026 marks the Mkhondo Local Municipality’s significant milestone as the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) officially handed over the refurbished Mkhondo (Piet Retief) Water Treatment Works. The handover forms part of the ongoing National Water Month programme and is undertaken in collaboration with the Gert Sibande District Municipality.

This critical infrastructure project represents a major step towards addressing water supply challenges in the area and ensuring that communities have access to reliable, safe, and quality drinking water.

The official handover ceremony was attended by the Department of Water and Sanitation Provincial Head, Ms D. Sifunda; the Executive Mayor of Gert Sibande District Municipality, Cllr. Walter Mngomezulu; the Executive Mayor of Mkhondo Local Municipality, Cllr. Ngelosi Ndhlovu; the Speaker of Council, Cllr. M.J. Ngwenya; and the Whip of Council, Cllr. Daniel Thwala.

Also in support of the ceremony the Members of the Mayoral Committee, Councillors, Municipal officials,  and key stakeholders including, the Municipal Infrastructure Support Agent (MISA), the Komati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA), and the Department of Agriculture, Rural Development and Land and Environmental Affairs were also in attendance.

The municipality welcomed this development as a significant contribution towards strengthening water security and improving service delivery within the communities.
