The Oversight visit of the Regional Bulk Water Supply Project and the Construction of Gabosch Dam in Amsterdam commenced with a briefing session held on 07 May 2026, at the Gert Sibande District Municipality Council Chambers.
Ms D. Sifunda, the DWS Provincial Head conducted the briefing session, and the delegation headed straight to the construction site led by the Gert Sibande District Executive Mayor – Cllr Walter Mngomezulu and joined by Mkhondo Local Municipality Executive Mayor – Cllr Ngelosi Ndhlovu together with their entourage.
The visit forms part of ongoing efforts to monitor progress on the Amsterdam/Sheepmoor Regional Bulk Water Supply Project and Gabosch Dam, both aimed at strengthening water security and ensuring a sustainable supply for Mkhondo.
The purpose was to assess progress on the multi-million-rand infrastructure project, which was said to be on 67% and on track for completion on 23 October 2026.
The delegation received a detailed progress briefing, inspected completed works, and engaged with stakeholders on implementation and next steps.
The project is expected to improve water supply across Mkhondo and surrounding areas. Leadership highlighted its strategic importance and the anticipated socio-economic benefits for the region.
Other attendees included municipal officials from Zululand District Municipality and Chief Albert Luthuli Local Municipality, Ward Councillors, Mkhondo Local Municipality Municipal Manager – Mr Mthandeni Mkhonza, Department of Water and Sanitation officials, and other key stakeholders representatives.
