Mkhondo Local Municipality, through its Water and Sanitation Division, is proudly participating in the ongoing Science Week celebrations, hosted at the MONDI Science Centre and FET College. The event, which commenced on Monday, 4 August 2025, and to run until Friday, 8 August 2025.

Science Week serves as a national platform to ignite interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among learners, and the municipality is making a meaningful contribution through its interactive water retrieval exhibit.

The Water and Sanitation Division is demonstrating the journey of raw water — from its initial collection to its transformation into safe, clean water for household consumption. This hands-on display not only educates learners on the technical processes involved but also underscores the critical role that science and technology play in delivering essential municipal services.

As part of its presentation, the division highlighted a range of STEM-based careers available within the water and sanitation sector, including:

  • Water Treatment Plant Operators, who ensure that the treatment process adheres to safety and quality standards;
  • Water Quality Analysts, responsible for monitoring and analysing water samples to ensure regulatory compliance;
  • Sanitation Engineers, who design and manage effective sanitation systems to safeguard public health;
  • Environmental Scientists, who focus on reducing the environmental impact of water and sanitation operations.

By showcasing these career paths, the municipality hopes to spark curiosity and ambition among young learners, encouraging them to explore professions that can make a tangible difference in their communities.

This initiative also reflects the broader vision of the Department of Water and Sanitation, which advocates for a capable, skilled, and future-ready public sector. Through its active participation, Mkhondo Local Municipality reaffirms its dedication to capacity building, STEM promotion, and the continuous improvement of water and sanitation service delivery.
