The Mkhondo Local Municipality recently hosted Ingoma yoMAMA, a vibrant celebration of women, as part of Women’s Month commemorations. The event was held on 24 August 2025, under the leadership of Executive Mayor Cllr. Ngelosi Ndhlovu.
There were Twelve oMama groups that showcased their dance performances, celebrating cultural heritage, womanhood, and communal strength.
The MMC for Planning and Economic Development, Cllr. Thembi Khumalo, emphasized the enduring legacy of women involved in the historic 1956 march, laying the foundation for a freer society.
Executive Mayor Cllr. Ngelosi Ndhlovu on her remarks spoke about the scourge of gender-based violence, calling for strengthened prevention measures, increased survivor support, and coordinated interventions.
Mayor Ndhlovu advocated for greater support for women in business, highlighting the need for skills development, improved market access, and mentorship.
The mayor urged for deeper unity among women, promoting collaboration across traditional and civic structures to amplify their collective impact.
This event demonstrated the municipality’s commitment to celebrating women’s contributions and addressing the challenges they face. By promoting cultural heritage, women’s empowerment, and community development, Ingoma yoMAMA showcased the pivotal role of women in shaping communities and the nation
