MKHONDO LOCAL MUNICIPALITY CELEBRATES ARBOR DAY 2025

The Mkhondo Local Municipality (MLM) marked Arbor Day on 19 September 2025, with a celebration at Sithulihleza Community Hall. This significant event, now in its 10th consecutive year, showcased the municipality’s commitment to environmental protection and community engagement.

For the tenth year running, MLM has come together to celebrate Arbor Day, emphasizing the importance of trees and green spaces in our communities. The event was initiated by the Environmental and Social Development Unit, headed by Mr. Vusiwe Dube, and brought together local schools and stakeholders to highlight the importance of preserving trees and maintaining green spaces for future generations.

The celebration featured several activities, including the planting of three trees at the new eThandukukhanya Library. One of these trees was named “Hope” by the MMC for Corporate Services, Cllr. Mthandeni Mkhabela. Educational sessions on sustainable environmental practices were also conducted, with messages of support from key stakeholders.

Learners from local schools entertained attendees through singing, drama performances, and poetry, all aimed at highlighting the importance of environmental conservation. The event was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from PG Bison, Mondi, and the Inkomati Usuthu Water Management Catchment Agency.

In his keynote address, Councillor Mthandeni Mkhabela emphasized the importance of protecting the environment and reminded everyone that the health of our planet depends on collective action and care. The event concluded with a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement, highlighting the importance of working together to promote sustainable practices and ensure a healthier planet for future generations.
