Mkhondo Local Municipality, through the Environmental Management and Social Development Unit, successfully hosted the 11th Annual Environmental Summit on 05 June 2026, at Welverdiend Guesthouse.
The summit was held under the theme, “Sustainable Communities: A Shared Responsibility,” which is aligned with the global commemoration of World Environment Day, observed annually on 5 June.
The summit aimed to provide a valuable platform to raise awareness about environmental protection, emphasise the urgent need to combat plastic pollution, and explore practical solutions for safeguarding the environment for future generations in Mkhondo and its surrounding areas.
Over the years, the municipality has made notable progress in promoting environmental sustainability, as reflected in its recent achievements at the Gert Sibande District Cleanest Municipality Awards.
The gathering was graced by learners from across Mkhondo, whose participation highlighted the importance of involving young people in environmental conservation initiatives.
Various key stakeholders were also present, including municipal officials, Mr P. Mathebula representing the MEC of the Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, educators, MLM councillors, government officials, and other key stakeholders.
