eMKHONDO – The Mpumalanga Department of Education, in partnership with Mkhondo Local Municipality, hosted a Motivation and Pledge-Signing Ceremony for Grade 12 learners from the Mkhondo East and West Circuits on 9 October 2026 at Hoërskool Piet Retief.
The ceremony sought to inspire matriculants to take full responsibility for their education, stay focused and committed, and strive for academic excellence as they prepare for the final examinations.
Delivering the keynote address, Executive Mayor Cllr. Ngelosi Ndhlovu urged learners to dedicate themselves to their studies and make their families and communities proud.
He cautioned learners against social ills that derail academic progress, including substance abuse, teenage pregnancy and excessive use of social media, stressing the importance of discipline, responsible decision-making and prioritising education.
Guest speaker, Pastor Sthembiso Zondo, encouraged candidates to remain resilient and diligent, and to keep their faith throughout their academic journey.
“Persevere through challenges and approach your examinations with determination and confidence,” said Pastor Zondo.
The Department of Education also honoured top-performing learners from various schools across both circuits with awards for academic excellence – a gesture aimed at celebrating achievement and motivating others to improve their performance.
A highlight of the day was the pledge-signing ceremony, where candidates formally committed to uphold examination rules and regulations, maintain academic integrity and conduct themselves responsibly throughout the examination period.
The event was attended by representatives from the Department of Social Development, the South African Police Service (SAPS), ubukhosi bakwa Yende, ubukhosi bakwa Mahlobo, and other education stakeholders.
